Your guide to IT lingo

We've compiled below some of the common terms that you might hear when shopping an IT project. Knowing the vocabulary can be an important factor in making the right decision.

Bandwidth

The amount of Network and Internet speed and capacity you have in your facilities and subscribe to. It's only as fast as your slowest component.

Bounce

Power device off and on, i.e.: "Bounce the server to reset it."

Cloud

Computer storage and/or Programs stored online usually by a Third Party Provider

Co Lo

Co Location:a site that has another system or partition that is an up to date mirror of your main server or application

Compiler

Turns source code into object code

Debug

Find logic errors in Source Code. The terms "bug" and "debugging" are popularly attributed to Admiral Grace Hopper in the 1940s. While she was working on a Mark II computer at Harvard University, her associates discovered a moth stuck in a relay and thereby impeding operation, whereupon she remarked that they were "debugging" the system.

Hash Balance

A quick total program of specific fields for data validation.

Hybrid Cloud

Combination of Private and Public Cloud to enhance reliability.

Interpretive Code

What the programmer writes and the computer runs without a compiler.

Legacy Code

Programming that has been replaced by newer code that implements the same  functionality or better

Object Code

What the computer runs. Sometimes known as "machine code".

Off Prem

“Off Premise” stored off site with a Third Party Provider

On Prem

“On Premise” stored in a company’s building

Open Source

something that is shared with knowledgeable others to be enhanced, supported and implemented, usually at a lower price than commercially available. i.e.: software, document, article, etc.

Private Cloud

Enterprise owns, manages, and is responsible for all equipment, software, infrasturcture, support, vendors, and personnel that are required by the business.

Public Cloud

Third Party Provider (TPP) owns, manages, and is responsible for all equipment, software, infrastructure, support, vendors, and personnel that are required by the business.

Source Code

What the programmer writes

UPS

Uninterruptible Power Supply: when there is a brownout or blackout, this switches to provide electricity. They are sized by the load and run time. 

Virtual Machine

The ability for one server to function as many servers, as opposed to adding physical servers
