Saving Money vs. Spending Money

“It’s the stingy man who pays the most.”

Years ago, I used to listen to an NPR program from Boston known as “Car Talk”. Running from 1977 to October 2012, two brothers, Tom and Ray Magliozzi, were the co-hosts of NPR's weekly radio show Car Talk, where they were known as "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers".

In it, they would ponder questions from listeners and answer their questions. Sometimes they would discuss between husband and wife about how to handle a car problem. Inevitably, there would be someone trying to save money and time which normally ended in abject failure or damage to the engine and cost an inordinate amount to repair or dump it, hence their saying, “it’s the stingy man who pays the most”.

    What's My Point?

When it comes to spending money on a project the facets of “good, fast, and cheap: pick 2” come up. This is the Project Management Triangle. That means there’s always a trade off:

Cheap + fast = lower quality work
    Fast + good = expensive
Good + cheap = not happening anytime soon

          Faster? No changes allowed!

Write the absolute firm definition of what is wanted
          Define “Drop Dead Dates”
What is the minimum segment you could live with?

          Cheaper?

Plan ahead with a long lead time
You may have to increase the budget
Ask the vendor how would they tackle the request if it was inhouse for them

          Better?

Clearly define why this needs to be done and plan heavily
Meet with developers to clearly make certain they understand what is requested
Ask their advice on the best way to tackle the project

          Summary

If you try to hurry a project and get it for a song (good and cheap), you may well end up paying more, in the long run, to get it done than getting it correct the first time. The old axiom, “You get what you pay for” certainly holds true. Here’s an example from Tom and

          Ray:
